How to deep clean your mattress

How to deep clean your mattress!

When you think of spring cleaning, you instantly think of the blinds, baseboards, light fixtures, and doors. We have a great step-by-step article on how to dust your home like a pro.

However, the last place you end up after a spring cleaning is your bed. Yet why do we not think about deep cleaning our mattresses when we are spring cleaning? We think of washing the sheets, comforter, pillowcases, and maybe the pillow and mattress protector, but rarely do we think about the mattress itself.

One may ask, well, I have a mattress protector on my bed, and I didn’t go cheap, and I bought one that fully encloses my mattress, so I’m good, so there is no need for me to deep clean my mattress. Or you may be that person who doesn’t allow pets in your bed or no eating in bed; no midnight snacks in bed 🙁 No pet cuddles. How do you even sleep without your best friend not beside you? What if they get cold at night or are lonely? How do you show them your love miles away from you???? Oh wait, let’s get back to why you should clean your mattress (and why not sleeping with your pet is scientifically better for you and saves you money on doctor visits…)

Truthfully, a mattress protector can only do so much to protect your mattress. Dust particles, dandruff, dead skin, and germs can still get through to your mattress, even with a mattress protector on it. Mattress protectors help prevent spills on the mattress; large amounts of pollen and pet hair still get through to the mattress itself, but they can’t fully protect your mattress from ever needing a deep cleaning. They just help prevent it from needing to be cleaned more often.

How often is it often enough, you may ask? In an article by the Sleep Foundation, it is recommended that your mattress be cleaned twice a year or every six months, more often if you have been very sick back to back or are a horrible sweater at night. If you find yourself waking up more routinely throughout the night than usual, it could be because your mattress needs to be cleaned more often than every six months.

How do you clean a mattress, and when is the best time to do so?

To clean a mattress you only need a few supplies:

  • Vacuum/ vacuum brush attachments
  • Box of baking soda
  • Cleaning rag
  • Hot soapy water
  • Shampooer if you have one

First, you will strip the bed and wash all your linens in a hot water cycle. Bonus: You can pour a cup of vinegar into the load for extra disinfecting. While the linens are in the washer, use this time to throw any throw pillows or pillows you can not wash in the dryer on high heat so the heat can disinfect them for you, and they plump back up in the dryer, so double win.

Second, you will remove the mattress protector if you have not already done so and wash that on a hot water cycle, but dry it on a low setting so it’s not too tight to get back on the mattress. After the mattress protector is removed let’s get to vacuuming. In this step you can use the brush attachment for your vacuum and run it slowly on your bed starting from side to side or top to bottom; whichever is more comfortable for you to reach.

Now is the time to remove any stains you may have on the mattress. Don’t worry if you do not have a shampooer you can use a cleaning rag with hot soapy water and it will work just fine. In this step by sure not to soak the mattress with either product as it will slow down moving onto the next step. After the areas on the bed are dry you have to spot clean you can move onto the next step: the baking soda phase.

The baking soda phase is exactly what it sounds like. This is where you get to rip that box of .99 baking soda open and sprinkle that whole puppy all over your bed. Now is the time for you to bring out the soundtrack to Hey Ya! Shake it like a Polaroid picture… and get to shaking that baking soda like you’re developing a Polaroid picture. Fully cover the mattress in baking soda and let it sit. The longer the baking soda sits on your mattress, the longer the soda penetrates its fibers. We recommended 12 hours; however, if you started too late in the day and 12 hours would be going into your sleep routine, don’t stress it. Any length of time will work at disinfecting the mattress.

Once the baking soda has had time to disinfect, it’s back to vacuuming. Slowly vacuum the bed with the brush or furniture attachment going in the same direction you vacuumed the first time. The slower you move the attachment on the bed, the more particles it will suck out of your mattress, leaving you with a cleaner mattress to rest your well-deserving head on at night. After you have vacuumed up all the baking soda, you can start making the bed.

Once all your linens are clean and dry, it’s time to make your bed fresher than when you started. Start by putting on the mattress and pillow protectors and working your way up to the now fluffy throw pillows (isn’t the dryer a miracle worker?).

Now that your bed is all Instagram-worthy, (take a photo and tag us on IG @CynsationalCleanLLC) looking like a million bucks, all fresh and clean, rip those throw pillows off and jump in because you deserve it…..Enjoy the peacefulness of your clean mattress while you can before your spouse comes throwing the throw pillows off the bed to go to bed (maybe that’s how throw pillows got their names is because spouses throw them aggressively off the bed at night “because we don’t need 10 pillows on the bed for looks) Yeah yeah go to sleep in your clean bed and tell me how much better you’ve slept because I cleaned the mattress.
